The Roost

Sat Aug 8, 2009, 5:38 PM
Last Sunday, I joined 13 photographers in a big group shoot at The Roost, a fantastic photographic/TV location in Hackney London. Over four floors (basement, ground floor and two upper floors), there is a huge variety of rooms, each with a different selection of wonderful, mostly retro, furniture and wall deco (many rooms even have different paint schemes/wallpaper on each wall) and props. There are huge windows in most of the upstairs rooms providing plenty of natural light.

Most of the photographers had brought their own models to but there was also a group of models available for work. I had arranged for two friends to come along and also took advantage of the wonderful Druidess of Midian (a professional model and actress among other things) and her partner Nikolai being there.

I had an absolute blast and think I've managed to produce some of my best work to date.
The set with Nevla had a gangster theme and was mostly humorous prompted by his purple zoot suit. The set with Druidess and Nikolai was mostly improvised by letting the two play with each other. I would pick a location and together we would come up with ideas for poses.
The final set with my good and stunningly beautiful friend Maria featured four different outfits (two of which I haven't uploaded yet).
Here are three examples, have a look through my gallery for more.

Finally another model shoot

Infrequent messages

Last Thursday I met up with my delightful and gorgeous friend Miko. She had commissioned me to take some photos of her new back piece and while we were at it, we added some more ideas which included playing with a ball of light, a bathtub filled with red fabric and low key bodyscapes with a sring of pearls. All in all, a creative and successful afternoon.

Make sure to check back regularly this week as I'll be updating my gallery with a few more shots. Samples:

Another great workshop

Scott Church does it again.

Over the next few weeks I'll be processing and uploading my favourites taken during another workshop run by :iconscottchurch:. The man is a master and a genius and has ways of bringing across that genius to others. He definitely opened my eyes and I'm slowly getting an inkling of how to see the things and details he can see. If he's ever in your area, go and join one of his seminars, you won't regret it.
I've already made a start with the lovely Jasolia.

Back to portraits

The lovely Jeni

Jeni is a good friend (not a model!) who was visiting from Manchester so I converted her boyfriend's dining room into a makeshift studio as it has a nice big window. The bed in the spare room was well lit, too, there just wasn't as much space as I'd have liked but I still got some reasonable results. I'm really happy with them and the model is, too. There might be one or two more shots coming up.

Macros

I don't update this as often as I should, I think so here's a little something:
As you can see, I've been playing around with macro photography recently. I've had the Tamron for a while but for some reason failed to do something constructive with it so I've been finding little things to take big pictures of. I hope you enjoy.

I also got a fine new addition to my lens collection: a Nikkor 85mm f1.4D as I wanted a high quality, medium portrait lens. This will hopefully be used very soon. Watch this space.
